For a girl like me who lives in jeans and tank tops putting on a wedding dress can, at first, make you feel a little stupid and uncomfortable. Of course once I found the dress of my dreams that feeling went away until…….. the veil came out! A veil… me….. Ha!

I can assure you that I am not the traditional bride. Veils, garters or top tables will not be happening at my wedding. I was almost talked into buying a traditional wedding dress by my Mam but I saw the error of my ways on my second visit to Ruben Bridal and went with what I love. My taste mixed with traditional will result in a birdcage veil! I think a birdcage veil is more my style but I have found over the past few days that my style isn’t at all popular in Ireland. I went into one bridal shop last Thursday and asked if the lady had any in stock and she didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. So after my defeat I turned to my friend google! It seems you can buy all sorts of amazing head wear that are not traditional veils etc.

I got chatting to some lovely brides to be on an online forum and found that there are a few ladies looking for an alternative. One lady tells me she is heading to Hickeys to get all she needs to make one herself…. I’m not sure I’m that creative but I’ll put it down as a possibility if I can’t find what I’m looking for.

Online there are many places in the US selling birdcage veils but there are very few in Ireland. I contacted a bridal shop called Pure Bliss and they have two lovely veils for sale. I enquired into any new stock coming in and they replied that they are not getting any new birdcage veils in. Pity.

If you look up etsy.com there are hundreds of handmade birdcage veils for sale but none I can see coming for Ireland. I think it might be best to stick to Irish made and support the economy and all that jazz. Keep in mind my budget does not stretch to designer prices!
